In the landscape

It was the lithograph Seven Runes (above) by Patricia Leighton (in an advert. for the New Gallery of Modern Art, Charlotte, NC) which I first encountered in my stroll through the current issue of Sculpture magazine, and then I came to the article about her and Del Geist.  I was fascinated by their work, and their approach to sculpture in the landscape.
I very much enjoy the solidity of the great lumps of metal and rock in Del Geist's sculpture,
and the solid hills they carve and build, (and which remind me of Charles Jencks' projects)
but I also was drawn to the knitted or woven figures in the above two images.  Patricia Leighton studied with Magdalena Abakanowicz after acquiring her degree from Edinburgh College of Art (I am delighted that she is a Scot)- and I can see links with both Abakanowicz's sisal weavings and her later bronze figures.  I find their work exciting and it has inspired much thinking.  I also now have the strong desire to seek out those pieces that are in the UK.

Wow, I love their work, and can see the influence of Abakanowicz, even Andy Goldsworthy and other environmental artists. I wish I could come along with you to seek out their works in the UK.

Yes, Marja-Leena, I love the mix of the hand of man and the manipulation of nature within nature. It will be some time before I can set off to seek any of the pieces, but I hope to post some photos when I do.

How wonderful it must have been to walk through the forest and come upon "Vigil"! The last pic looks like it might have a Maya Lin "wave field" in it - do you know her work?

Margaret, thanks for the intro to Maya Lin's wondrous work. There seems to be a handful of folks working on 'waves' or somesuch in grass-covered mounds these days.
